Bulova Accutron

In March , the Elgin Watch Company announced the first battery-powered mechanical wristwatch, a laboratory prototype of what would become the Elgin Grade This early electrical movement, described as the greatest advance in timekeeping in years, was functionally identical to a traditional mechanical movement, minus the mainspring power source. Beat regulation was still governed by a conventional balance wheel and hairspring escapement, and accuracy was comparable to a fully mechanical movement of similar quality. Coinciding with the development of the Elgin Grade was the Hamilton , which would become the world’s first commercially viable electromechanical watch. Although Elgin and Hamilton had long been known for technological innovation, their singular novelty of electric power would prove to be far less ambitious than Bulova’s response. Bulova’s answer to modern timepiece design would be so fundamentally revolutionary, that it would ultimately drive Elgin and Hamilton out of the watch business altogether. After examining the Elgin electric movement, Bulova assigned electronics engineer Max Hetzel to produce a new type of electronic movement which would exceed the accuracy of a conventional mechanical or electrical watch. By , Hetzel received his first shipment of Raytheon CK transistors, and began constructing the first prototype of what would be known as the Accutron chronometric micro-powerplant, a new type of timekeeping mechanism with a tuning fork timebase. Like conventional watches, Bulova Accutrons have a train of gear wheels to drive the hands. However, that is basically where the similarity ends. In an Accutron, there are two areas of special interest to use. One is the Electronic Circuitry, and the other is the Index Mechanism.

Secret for decades, the A spy plane program used the most cutting edge technology of its time — including Bulova’s Accutron. Talking Watches With Todd Levin. The Accutron is both a watch and a technology, and when the first Accutron tuning fork watches were first released to the public in they were seen as nothing short of revolutionary. Quartz watches were still a decade away, and while the Accutron wasn’t the first electric watch — that honor goes to the Hamilton Electric , which debuted in to much fanfare — it was the first to achieve widespread success.

Unfortunately for Hamilton their watch was rushed into production and exhibited significant initial teething problems, and when the Accutron came along, the Hamilton Electric was doomed. The tuning fork mechanism of the Accutron gave it unprecedented accuracy and was seen, as well, as marvelous technology, and with unquestioned superiority on its side, Accutron timekeepers and watches found wide acceptance not only from consumers, but also in the worlds of astronautics and aeronautics — including in the cockpit of the fastest plane ever made.

It’s a story maybe better known within the Accutron enthusiast collector community than in general — perhaps aptly, for a tale so rooted in Cold War-era cloak-and-dagger secrecy. But when an aircraft called the A first flew as part of a CIA “black aircraft” project, it was the most advanced in the world, and for its pilots, the CIA selected what was then the world’s most advanced watch.

If you know something about aircraft, you probably recognize this one immediately — only you might think it’s the very closely related plane made for the Air Force, the famous SR Blackbird.

Bulova watches are not marked with names or identification codes that allow you to simply look at the watch and derive the model and age. Rather, you have to do a bit of research and try to match case styles to online resources. The difficulty of identification is compounded by the fact that Bulova re-used names was some frequency.

A name in use in the s might very well crop up again in the s on a totally different looking model. Additionally, within each model, Bulova often produced variations of the style. There are also a few examples of very early watches s period appearing without any Bulova markings on the exterior.

Those three date ranges are differentiated by the presence or absence of certain case and movement markings as well as the nature of any such markings, as explained below. In general, for all time periods, it is important to understand that Bulova watches never provide an obvious date of manufacture anywhere on the watch. Rather, the date must be “de-coded” using symbols, serial numbers, and two-character codes placed on various parts of the watch.

These codes and the manner in which they should be interpreted is the subject of this article. Many observers of Bulova watches are confused by the sometimes seen patent dates stamped on the inside of some Bulova watch cases, and they misinterpret such dates as the time of manufacture. In point of fact, those patent dates apply only to certain aspects of the case design and indicate only when those general designs were patented.

Those designs were used on many watches produced over a number of years, and the applicable patent date in no way indicates when any particular watch was produced. Below are images showing the two patent dates that often cause confusion. Watches manufactured prior to are difficult to date with certainty. For example, movements made prior to do not bear the standard movement date code found on watches dated through
